MACRA recently commenced a review of the Malawi National Postcode System to incorporate administrative and geographical developments that have occurred across the country over the past five years.
Opening the workshop, MACRA’s National Addressing System Manager, Limbani Sekani, said the review is necessary to ensure that Malawi’s postcode system remains relevant, accurate and responsive to the country’s evolving landscape.
Sekani explained that the review is part of a mandatory exercise conducted every five years to assess the effectiveness of the postcode system and identify areas requiring updates and improvement.
He said over time, several changes have occurred across the country, including the elevation of some traditional leaders, creation of new administrative areas and adjustments in settlement patterns, making it important for the postcode system to reflect the current realities on the ground.
The postcode system is one of the key components of the National Addressing System. Postcodes help identify and organise geographical locations to facilitate the delivery of services.
An effective postcode system supports the broader national development agenda by improving location accuracy, facilitating public service delivery and enhancing access to emergency response and e-commerce.
The review process brought together stakeholders from various institutions to provide technical input and recommendations which will guide the modernization of Malawi’s postcode framework.
