April 2026 will be an exciting month for MACRA as the Authority unveils the National ICT Innovation Awards fulfilling its statutory mandate to promote research and development in communication services.
According to Wezi Salima, who is leading the preparations for the event, the Awards were open to Malawian citizens or locally registered entities, ICT startups, SMEs, and technology enterprises.
“The Awards were also open to individual innovators and developers, students, academic institutions and research organizations,” she said.
Eligibility criteria required that applicants submit ICT innovations that had reached at least the prototype stage and that the prototype be functional and demonstrable.
The top two innovators will have an opportunity to showcase their solutions at the ‘ITU AI for Good Global Summit’ in Geneva, Switzerland, gaining international exposure and engagement with global ICT and AI stakeholders.
Finalists also stand a chance to benefit from business incubation or acceleration programs, mentorship and technical advisory services.
MACRA previously supported local innovators on the global stage including Samson Fiado, who showcased his ‘EasyBooks Accounting Software’ at ITU Telecom World summit in 2015, Budapest, Hungary.
EasyBooks has since won several awards including the Spirit of Tech Award presented by the U.S. Department of State and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
MACRA remains committed to promoting innovation and supporting the growth of a vibrant digital economy in accordance with recognized international standards and applicable international law.
