Every year, World Radio Day which falls on 13th February reminds us of the power of this timeless medium. This year, under the theme “Radio and Artificial Intelligence: AI is a tool, not a voice,” we are reminded that radio remains a powerful communication tool. Most importantly, we all share a responsibility to ensure that people continue to trust what is broadcast on the airwaves.
As we mark World Radio Day 2026, we recognise that Artificial Intelligence is opening new opportunities for innovation in broadcasting. However, technology alone does not build trust. Radio broadcasters do.
In today’s digital world, where social media is flooded with unverified information, radio continues to stand out as a trusted source of news, engagement, and cultural values.
Speaking on the commemoration, Mayamiko Nkoloma, said radio remains one of the most trusted and accessible platforms in Malawi, even as new technologies emerge.
“As we mark World Radio Day 2026, we recognise that Artificial Intelligence is opening new opportunities for innovation in broadcasting. However technology alone does not build trust. Radio broadcasters do. When used ethically and responsibly, AI should support professional judgement, creativity and public service values and not replace them,” said Nkoloma.
He encouraged broadcasters to embrace AI as a supportive tool that strengthens audience trust while upholding editorial independence and ethical broadcasting standards.
