MACRA has pledged to continue supporting the work of the Illegal Courier Operators Task Force as it starts to coordinate enforcement and regulatory compliance in a bid to eliminate illegal courier operations in the country.
Malawi’s courier sector is experiencing major difficulties as a result of the increasing numbers and presence of illegal as well as unregulated operators.
Speaking during the Task Force meeting, Acting Director of Postal and E-commerce, Mr. Burnet Namacha, said that as a regulator, the Authority will provide all the support required to help sanitize the sector in order to protect both the licensed operators and the consumers.
“We all know that it is the regulator’s duty to regulate the sector, but we decided to bring in other stakeholders to make our job easier and make it a joint team effort,” Namacha said.
In his remarks, Chairperson of the Task Force, Mr. Victor Sitima who is the Managing Director of DHL Malawi reaffirmed the collective commitment to protect consumers so that the task force meets its goals.
Among others, the Task Force is tasked to hold stakeholder engagements, create a roadmap for enforcement, and illegal courier operators mapping.
As stipulated under Section 182 of the Communications Act: operating an illegal courier service in Malawi attracts a penalty of a K1 million fine or a two-year prison sentence, or both.
