Telecommunication services have been fully restored following damage to critical national infrastructure caused by heavy and persistent rainfall in the Southern and Central Regions.
The service disruptions triggered the activation of the Emergency Telecommunications Operations Centre (ETOC), which serves as the national coordination hub for disaster response to ensure continuity of telecommunications services in Malawi.
The flooding resulted in roads being cut off, bridges swept away, and damage to optical fibre infrastructure laid along road corridors. Electricity supply was also affected, with damaged power poles causing outages at several Base Transceiver Station (BTS) sites.
MACRA Acting Director General, Mayamiko Nkoloma, has commended network operators for maintaining services under difficult conditions:
“I applaud the dedication and professionalism of our engineers, who worked around the clock in a highly challenging and risky environment to ensure continuity of telecommunication services.”
ETOC brings together telecommunications operators, ESCOM, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA), and other key stakeholders to monitor network performance, coordinate restoration efforts, prioritize critical infrastructure, and minimize service disruptions during the ongoing disaster.
