MACRA, in its capacity as the designated Data Protection Authority (DPA) commemorated the Data Privacy Week. Among the activities to celebrate the week, was a big walk and a data protection conference.
Speaking after a Big Walk which took place in Lilongwe, to mark the opening, Acting Director General, Mayamiko Nkoloma highlighted the importance of data protection and data privacy, noting the challenges policymakers face in ensuring responsible handling of personal data.
He emphasised the need for data controllers to equip people with accurate information, help them understand their rights, and enable them to take control of their personal data.
Following the big walk, the data protection conference was the second activity on the schedule to commemorate the week.
Opening the two-day conference Minister of Information and Communications Technology Hon. Dr Shadric Namalombwa, MP in his keynote address, said data privacy is critical to national development. He described data as a strategic national asset that improves service delivery and supports economic growth, urging ethical and responsible use of technology.
MACRA Acting Director General, Mayamiko Nkoloma said the Data Protection Act of 2024 makes privacy a shared responsibility that requires compliance from all digital users. He emphasised MACRA’s commitment, as the Data Protection Authority, to supporting institutions and protecting citizens’ data.
MACRA Board Chairperson Counsel Chancy Gondwe stressed that data protection is a compliance issue, not just security. He highlighted key principles of lawful, minimal, accurate and secure data processing, urging all stakeholders to foster a culture of compliance.
