MACRA today facilitated a Street naming exercise in Likoma district. This is an exercise that assigns street names by following NAS guidelines with the involvement of community representatives, councils, and the NAS team.

The names range from different themes, namely, rivers, names of animals, heroes, names of towns or cities or physical features. This depends on what the residents and chiefs agree. There are over 34 access roads that have been given names during this exercise in Likoma.

The Government of Malawi, through the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), is implementing the National Addressing System (NAS). Apart from the four major cities of Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu where NAS implementation started, this year the implementation exercise is being extended to district councils.

NAS is a multi-stakeholder-driven national undertaking whose primary objective is to develop a robust national physical addressing system in the country.
