Broadcasting and industry experts from Africa and beyond meeting at the Radio and Digital Audio Broadcasting Convention Africa 2023 have agreed to embrace Digital Broadcasting to counter the challenges that radio is facing in Africa.
Speaking at the convention MACRA’s Director of Broadcasting Mr. Zadziko Mankhambo said Malawi is looking forward to the digitization of radio as it is currently facing challenges to allocate frequencies in the analogue system due to congestion.
He said there is high demand for broadcasting services in Malawi, but the regulator is failing to licence more broadcasters and that the FM refarming process is underway to reorganize the FM band.
Currently MACRA in conjunction with broadcasters is conducting the spectrum re-farming process with the aim of re-organizing the frequency modulation (FM) band to free up space to license new entrants.
