MACRA has unveiled the First Lady Her Excellency Madam Monica Chakwera as Malawi’s Child Online Protection (COP) Ambassador. Madam Chakwera was unveiled during a fundraising dinner held at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre for Shaping Our Future Foundation, a charity which she founded to promote holistic development and education of village girls and street children.

“As the First Lady of Malawi, you embody compassion, dedication, and advocacy, qualities that are indispensable in championing the cause of Child Online Protection. Your Excellency’s role as a COP Ambassador signifies your readiness to leverage your platform and influence to raise awareness, advocate for policy reforms, and mobilize stakeholders towards a common goal of safeguarding our children in cyberspace,” said MACRA Board Chairperson Mrs Bridget Chibwana during the event.

The First Lady’s appointment is part of the Child Online Protection Strategy which MACRA in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations arm for Telecommunications, developed in 2023. The appointment marks a demonstration of the highest level of commitment towards attaining safer and secure online space for the country’s children.
